Media tries to spin sucker-punching cop Ismail Bhabha, citizens not having it

Unlike my typical format, I'm not going to copy and paste a portion of any article - I'm going to copy-and-paste the comments.

Anthony: "As a member of the military I understand what police have to go through on a daily basis and we all know that there are several people out there especially in Vancouver who make it harder for the police to do their jobs. But that is their job and they need to be able to perform professionally in all circumstances. What would happen if he would of punched the cop in the face? Jail! This cop should be made an example of. Just imagine, he did this knowing there was a camera. These assaults are not taken seriously by the police and if he get's off with a light suspension there's no hope for the next victim(s)

Raechel: "I sincerely don't care what his past actions are. Bhabha sucker-punched a man in the head, without justification, while that man was handcuffed and in his custody. Because that man ran a red light.

That's his legacy, now.

Brian1: "Canadian police have been beating up unarmed civilians for years. The advent of wide spread use of video cameras and cell phone cameras have brought this to the light in the past few years .Even the most die hard supporters of police have to admit there is a problem with police abusing authority and using excessive force.

In the few cases that have gone to court and got convictions the judges have given out sentences that are much lower than normal although police are supposed to be held to a higher standard.

As Canadian citizens we should demand that all officers wear mandatory video cameras for interactions with the public and that crown prosecutors and judges hold police to a high standard in their sentencing of convicted officers.

Enough is enough.

Canada to Africa: "I hope you die of thirst".

Canada said Thursday it is pulling out of a UN convention that fights drought, mostly in Africa, becoming the only nation to walk away from a pact that Ottawa says is a waste of money.Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Tory government quietly ordered the withdrawal from the 1994 convention last week, ahead of a scientific meeting on the agreement next month in Germany.

[...]

The move provoked an outcry from non-governmental aid agencies, environmentalists and the opposition, which accused Ottawa of isolating Canada and abandoning Africa through "maniacal" budget cuts.

"What's shocking about Canada withdrawing from this UN convention is that there are 194 signatories to this convention. That's everyone in the UN," said opposition New Democratic Party MP Paul Dewar.

"Now there are 193 signatories to this convention because Canada is the only country on the entire planet that is not part of this convention."

More realistically, it's the Prime Minister, a lifelong conservative, not wanting to be part of a charity with a massive overhead. That said, what a dick move.

City of Toronto slut-shaming woman who went public when city's mayor gropped her.

They're slut shaming Sarah Thomson because she made a sexually confident joke at a party and someone heard it.

The joke in question:

“There were a whole lot of women ogling him at the party so I asked him if I would have to sleep with him to get an interview,” said Thomson, publisher of the Women’s Post. “That was it. It was a joke, it was a party, there was nothing to it.”

This is what Toronto is willing to turn on a victim over.

Fuck you, Toronto.

Iowa K-9 cop may have roasted his partner to death in the back of his cruiser.

Authorities say the brutal heat is suspected in the death of a Des Moines police dog found dead inside a patrol vehicle.

Harley, a Labrador retriever assigned to the narcotics team, was found Wednesday afternoon. The temperature had already reached the low 90s.

Police Sgt. Chris Scott says Harley had been working with his human partner, Officer Brian Mathis, on Wednesday. Scott says it was Mathis who found Harley dead in the vehicle.

Investigators are checking how long Harley was left inside the vehicle and whether the air conditioner was on or some windows were rolled down.

Rape victim calls out Rob Ford's 'slut shaming' niece for calling her a whore. (LETTER)

Dear a lot of people, but specifically Ms. Krista Ford,

In advance I’d like to say I am sorry. This is not the ideal situation to first acquaint oneself with someone and I am mortified. Sorry! However, under the circumstance, I feel like you owe me a moment of your time, even though we’ve never meet.

The circumstance being you called me a whore.

I should clarify: I’m one of the victims of the recent string of sexual assaults in the Annex. ‘Sup? It’s nice to make you acquaintance.

So, you’ve called me a whore. Here we are. This is awkward now, isn’t it? You’re probably wondering if I’m going to challenge you on having been a member of Lingerie League. I’m not, because I’d never slut-shame another woman. I believe you have a right to your body and regardless of how you do or don’t dress it I believe you have a right to respect and personal security. I guess that’s the key difference in our thinking. You could wear a t-shirt that says “I’m literally asking for it” and I’d still advocate for your security.

That’s what I’m asking for this brief moment of your day, for your edification. You’re a woman and you should know that your body is yours and yours alone. No matter how you dress it, you have a right — an actual Charter of Rights and Freedom right — to not be sexually assaulted. You are entitled to life, liberty and the security of person. Welcome to Canada — you live here! If you weren’t aware of your Charter rights, other Canadian things you may have missed out on are double-doubles, good maple syrup, and Beachcombers*, so check that s--- out.

For the record, I was sexually assaulted while wearing a knee-length polka-dot dress. The last time I wore that dress, it was to Easter dinner at my Gran’s, where I’m fairly certain I could make little to no money whoring.

With due respect / sorry,

Alice Moran

Rob Ford's niece shames the victims of rape by implying they were at fault for their rapes. Also, she encourages carrying illegal weapons. Really.

The daughter of Toronto Coun. Doug Ford and the niece of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford had written the following message on Twitter: “Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore.”

[...]
Ford was a high-profile member of a Toronto women's football team, the Toronto Triumph, part of the Lingerie Football League.
[...]

Her advice to "carry mace" is also controversial, since mace is a prohibited and restricted weapon.

A similar comment from a Toronto police officer led to the creation of the Slut Walk, which has spread to cities across North America and Europe.
[...]
Slut Walk Toronto responded to Ford's comments on Thursday.

In a statement it said, "What Krista said was problematic for many reasons, including placing the onus for preventing sexual assault on a potential victim, pointing to clothes as a reason or inciting factor of sexual assault (time and time again proven to be untrue), and shaming survivors with 'don't dress like a whore'. When anyone says that 'dressing like a whore' makes someone liable to be raped, they're blaming existing survivors for their own victimization."

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford drives on city's busiest highway while reading.

Photos posted on Twitter appear to show the mayor reading a document while driving on the Gardiner Expressway.

When asked about the snapshots at a news conference Tuesday, Ford didn’t deny it happened, but said he still kept his eyes on the road.

He cited his busy schedule and said he uses the commute to catch up on his work.

In a post on their official Facebook page, Toronto police say they would not be able to lay charges because Ontario’s distracted driving legislation applies only to electronic devices.

However, police are urging Ford to get a driver.

“On behalf of all the citizens of Toronto that value road safety, Mr. Mayor ...please get a driver,” the post said. “It is obvious that you are busy enough to require one and no amount of money you are saving by not having one is worth the life of one of your citizens.”

You have a 1 in 100 chance of dying due to inattentive driving - you have a 1 in 325 chance of dying due to firearms. Which is to say, Rob Ford is more likely to kill you than any so-called gun-toting thug.
