Black Friday - 19-year-old Somali-born student arrested in bomb plot
A Somali-born teenager attempting to detonate what he believed was a car bomb at a packed Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Portland, Ore., was arrested by the authorities on Friday night. They had spent nearly six months tracking him and setting up a sting operation, officials in Oregon said.
The bomb, which was in a van parked off Pioneer Courthouse Square, was a fake — planted by F.B.I. agents as part of the elaborate sting — but “the threat was very real,” said Arthur Balizan, the F.B.I.’s special agent in charge in Oregon. An estimated 10,000 people were at the ceremony on Friday night, the Portland police said.

Black Friday - Ex-Marine stabbed in the back while volunteering for Toys for Tots
A US Marine reservist was stabbed in the back when a suspected Black Friday shoplifter fled a Best Buy store in Augusta, Ga., The Augusta Chronicle reported.
A man was seen on the store's security cameras attempting to steal a laptop computer about 1:15pm local time Friday. He became upset when store employees asked him to return the laptop, store sales manager Orvin Smith said.
“He was really irate. A whole lot of energy,” said Smith. “We basically tried to get him to let go of a laptop. In doing that, he finally let go of the laptop, ran out the front door, knocked one of my employees down and pulled out a knife so he could make sure he could get out the front door.”
The victim, identified as Cpl. Phillip Duggan, 24, was collecting toys for the Toys for Tots charity at the store with three other Marines. Smith said the Marines clotheslined the suspected shoplifter, at which point he began waving the knife around and stabbed Duggan in the back.

Black Friday - Man arrested for bringing a gun, knives and 'pepper grenade' to Wal-Mart
A police log said Scott wore a .40-caliber Glock handgun with a 30-round magazine in a holster at his hip, as well as two concealed knives and a "pepper grenade."
He also had prescription pills but no label or paperwork, the police log said.
Scott said he had a proper weapon permit in Arizona and believed it was reciprocal in Florida.
He also didn't understand why he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon when he wore the gun in plain sight, as advised by colleagues.
And he said he had proper documents for the prescription drugs.

Pastor gets 50 years for raping an orphan and giving her AIDS
On the fateful day, according to Prosecutor Chief Inspector Edward Etaye, the accused visited the home of the minor’s grandmother and cheated them that he wanted to offer a special prayer to the girl.
He told the grandmother about his prophesy that the granddaughter would one day become insane if special prayers were not offered to ward off the hovering bad spirits that were to attack her.
On hearing this, the grandmother, who trusted the man of God, released the only granddaughter to him for one-week special prayer session at the pastor’s home.

Schizophrenia may be caused by a viral infection
The facts of schizophrenia are so peculiar, in fact, that they have led Torrey and a growing number of other scientists to abandon the traditional explanations of the disease and embrace a startling alternative. Schizophrenia, they say, does not begin as a psychological disease. Schizophrenia begins with an infection.
The idea has sparked skepticism, but after decades of hunting, Torrey and his colleagues think they have finally found the infectious agent. You might call it an insanity virus. If Torrey is right, the culprit that triggers a lifetime of hallucinations—that tore apart the lives of writer Jack Kerouac, mathematician John Nash, and millions of others—is a virus that all of us carry in our bodies. “Some people laugh about the infection hypothesis,” says Urs Meyer, a neuroimmunologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. “But the impact that it has on researchers is much, much, much more than it was five years ago. And my prediction would be that it will gain even more impact in the future.”

Scientists discover unknown lizard species at lunch buffet
It may be an old menu standby to Vietnamese diners, but it's turned into a smorgasbord of discovery for scientists.
Researchers have identified a previously undocumented species of all-female lizard in the Mekong River delta that can reproduce itself by cloning, and the story of how it was discovered is almost as exotic as the animal itself.
Leiolepis ngovantrii is a small lizard found only in southern Vietnam. A Vietnamese reptile scientist who came across tanks full of the remarkably similar looking reptiles at small diners in rural villages in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province became intrigued when he noticed that all of the lizards appeared to be female.
[...]
Dr. Lee Grismer and his son, Jesse Grismer, a doctoral candidate, flew all the way to Hanoi and then faced a grueling two-day motorcycle trip out to a restaurant where the owner promised to set aside a stash of the creatures for study.
But there was a little problem, says Grismer.
"Unfortunately, the owner wound up getting drunk, and grilled them all up for his patrons... so when we got there, there was nothing left."

Nazis Were Given ‘Safe Haven’ in U.S.
The Justice Department report, describing what it calls “the government’s collaboration with persecutors,” says that O.S.I investigators learned that some of the Nazis “were indeed knowingly granted entry” to the United States, even though government officials were aware of their pasts. “America, which prided itself on being a safe haven for the persecuted, became — in some small measure — a safe haven for persecutors as well,” it said.
The report also documents divisions within the government over the effort and the legal pitfalls in relying on testimony from Holocaust survivors that was decades old. The report also concluded that the number of Nazis who made it into the United States was almost certainly much smaller than 10,000, the figure widely cited by government officials.
The Justice Department has resisted making the report public since 2006. Under the threat of a lawsuit, it turned over a heavily redacted version last month to a private research group, the National Security Archive, but even then many of the most legally and diplomatically sensitive portions were omitted.

2,000 aborted fetuses found at Bangkok Buddhist temple

On the grounds of a Buddhist temple, dozens of white plastic bags lay in carefully arranged rows. Each sack was knotted at the top and contained the remains of a fetus. Thai authorities found about 2,000 remains in the temple's mortuary, where they had been hidden for a year — apparently to conceal illegal abortions.
A strong stench had drawn police to the temple in Bangkok's old city Tuesday, and authorities searching the mortuary — where bodies awaiting cremation are normally kept — initially found more than 300 fetuses. They returned Friday to find more than five times that number, according to police Lt. Col. Kanathud Musiganont.
Health officials, police and charity workers counted the fetuses, placing each one in a white plastic bag bearing the charity's name in red Thai script and Chinese characters. The group is often involved in the handling of remains, including recovering bodies from accident scenes and organizing burials.

Two women and an eleven-year-old boy stabbed to death, butchered, stuffed in a tree
Two women and an 11-year-old boy were stabbed to death and dismembered before their remains were placed in a hollow tree, a coroner has revealed.
Tina Herrmann, her son Kody Maynard and her friend Stephanie Sprang were attacked with a knife and stabbed multiple times in the back and chest, Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle said.
'They were then placed inside large plastic garbage bags and later lowered into the hollow of a large tree,' Ogle added in a statement.
They were attacked on November 10 and there were no signs of sexual assault, she said.
The search began two days later after Herrmann failed to turn up for work and a co-worker who went to check on Herrmann at home found the place spattered with blood.
Three days later, Herrmann's 13-year-old daughter, Sarah Maynard, was found bound and gagged in the basement of a home.

Former head of police board illegally monitored by crooked cop(s?)
Secret recordings obtained by CBC News offer proof that Toronto police conducted illegal eavesdropping on a former police board chair.
There have been allegations for years that police began spying on their civilian boss, Susan Eng, beginning in May 1991, days after she was sworn in.
Then police chief Bill McCormack and Julian Fantino — superintendent of detectives at the time and later police chief and OPP commissioner — have repeatedly refused to say whether they requested or were aware of the surveillance.
But now CBC News has obtained the tape recordings of Eng talking to her confidant and friend, Peter Maloney, about everything from police business to the very personal.
At the time, police had gone to a judge claiming Maloney may have ties to drug dealers.
