A law student has been charged with drugging a professor then setting her ablaze, killing her, in order to pocket 1.5 million rubles ($50,000) she had entrusted him with to help her purchase a new apartment.
The student, 23, and an alleged accomplice, 20, were charged with murder on Tuesday after the 53-year-old woman succumbed to severe burns in intensive care, the Investigative Committee branch for the far eastern city of Yakutsk, Sakha republic, said in a statement.
On Nov. 6, the teacher, Marianna Burtseva, invited the student into her apartment to celebrate the supposed purchase of a new residence, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported. The student, identified only as Maxim V., then allegedly slipped sleeping pills into her drink and, when she fell asleep, covered her with newspapers and lit her on fire ― turning on the gas on the stove on his way out.
